Mildmannered Industries

Q: Does Iris support any cameras apart from iSights?

A: Up until now, Iris has been tested almost exclusively with iSight cameras.

We would very much like to support other Cameras.

We have had success reports with Iris and the following cameras:

If you have a different Camera, please try it with Iris, and let us know how you get one. Most likely it will not work, but we may be able to get it working with some changes at our end.

Q: Does iGlasses work with Iris?

A: The current version of iGlasses will not work with Iris, but we expect support to be added in future versions.

Q: I'm having trouble sending email from Iris. What should I do?

A: First see the "Solving Problems" in Iris's Apple Help.

If the problem persists, please file a bug report.

Q: I have a G3 or G4 computer, without Quartz Extreme support. Will Iris work?

A: Iris should work ok, but performance will be quite slow. On any Mac with Quartz Extreme support, performance will be much better.

Q: Can I view Iris's WebCam on my iPhone?

A: Yes. In the WebCam settings, set the "Show WebCam via" option to Meta Refresh.

You will also need to set up your network so that the WebCam can be reached from outside. See Iris's Help for more information on this.

Q: Can I tell if my Mac has a QuickDraw Extreme video card?

A: Go to "About this Mac" in the Apple Menu, and click the "More Info..." button.

The System Profiler application will run. Under "Hardware", look in "Graphics/Displays".

There should be an entry for Quartz Extreme, indicating whether it is Supported or not.

Q: In the Help, it says that the WebCam is advertised via Bonjour. How do I see the Bonjour advertisement?

A: In Safari, open the Bookmarks page (Click on the litte book icon in the Bookmarks bar). There should be an entry in the left hand pane called "Bonjour" that will list all the Bonjour services on your local network.

Q: I want to leave Iris on while I'm away from my home/office, but my Computer keeps going to sleep. How should I set the Energy Saver settings?

A: In Energy Saver, set the Computer to Never Sleep. To save power, you can set the Display and Hard Disks as soon as/whenever possible.

Q: Why does Iris connect to port 80 at leyton.reserved.org at startup?

A: What you are seeing is the automatic Sparkle update check, connecting back to www.mildmanneredindustries.com

MildMannered Industries is hosted on a shared server, administered by Richard Leyton.

During the update check, the only information transmitted is your IP address, and the version of Iris that you are running.

You can turn the update check off when you first run Iris, or at any time, from the General Preference pane.
